Originally we had started building West GP’s new website on modern infrastructure, using advanced architecture and unconventional design. We ran into a few problems along the way that was an excellent learning experience and ultimately made us better at our jobs. West Grande Prairie Dental is one of our biggest and longest standing clients, so we really wanted to build something truly next level.
Building a new system from the ground up.
Due to massive technical security breaches in platforms such as WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, etc. We opted to create our own Content Management System, and when I mean from scratch – I mean from scratch.
By the time it came to roll out the website for revisions, we had a very sturdy platform under our belts, and hundreds of hours had been spent developing this new platform that.
We had successfully implemented a completely custom coded website with amazing features such as;
- Instant page loading by using dynamic, and predictive caching.
- Pre-fetching data at the DNS level for our Content Delivery Network.
- Load balancing through Kubernetes technology.
- Local custom JS libraries.
- Plus a whole lot more…
Unfortunately, there were major problems.
The website was designed around modern browser capability and didn’t leave much room for most outdated browsers, and older devices. We were running into the issue of having to almost completely build a new website so that older browsers and devices could actually view and use the website. This is the problem with “going all out” and building the most modern website possible – half of their target audience wasn’t going to be able to use this new website.
Building for everyone.
Much like designing for responsiveness so the website would look and function the same across all platforms and devices, we had to go back to square one and make sure even those using Windows XP would be able to use the website. The bottom line was being able to provide access to as much of West Grande Prairie Dental’s clientele as possible. Simply having the best Dental website we could possibly provide, was not going to cut it. We needed to make sure that anyone and everyone could use the website to do whatever they needed to do. Fill out Forms, Book an Appointment Online, or simply learn more about the practice.
Back to WordPress!
If you don’t know where to start, go back to the beginning. We’ve always built WordPress websites at Elevated Web Solutions. It’s affordable for both us and the client to develop on, and we just know everything there is to know about it. We ported everything over using the most universally friendly systems as possible to ensure compatibility across as many mediums as possible and eventually finished the project.
In closing, our clients were happy knowing their needs were met, and we were still able to churn out a pretty cool website for them and their clients.
